HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 1031

By Representatives Kirsent, Herzog, Kopel, Tanner, Webb, Groff, T. Hernandez, Neale and Reeser: also Senators Donley, Arnold, Baca, Bishop, Ezzard, Fowler, Gallagher, Glass, Groff, Martinez, Mendez, F. Powers, Sandoval, Strickland, Wells, Beno, Calihan, Fenion and Peterson.

Whereas, January 20, 1986, marks the first observance of the federal legal holiday, established by Public Law No. 98-144, to honor the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

Whereas, January 20, 1986, marks the commemoration and observance of the State of Colorado’s legal holiday, established by House Bill No. 1201 in the 1984 session to honor the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

Whereas, This holiday should serve as a time for Americans to reflect upon the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

Whereas, It is appropriate for the Colorado General Assembly to coordinate efforts with cities, towns, counties, school districts and other local governmental entities and with private organizations within Colorado in the first observance of the federal and state legal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; now, therefore,

Be it Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-fifth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:

That the Colorado General Assembly hereby encourages appropriate observances, ceremonies and activities and the adoption of appropriate measures to ensure the observance and commemoration of the federal and state legal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr., throughout all the cities, towns counties, school districts and local governments within Colorado.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution will be sent to each city, town, county, school district and local governmental unit within the state upon final adoption of this resolution by the General Assembly.
